Upper Norrland, Norrbotten and Västerbotten, is Sweden’s northernmost region and has the largest land area and lowest population density in the country. The region flourishes from rapid economic growth, high concentration of valuable natural resources and low unemployment rates, but there are also several critical challenges. Northern Norrland has faced with shrinking of the workforce, elderly demographic distribution, increased cost structures combined with decreasing tax base.

1,100 billion SEK is currently being invested in northern Sweden, the country's largest combined investment effort in new technology towards battling climate change. Northern Sweden is in general an under-invested region with numerous of globally competitive, innovative and sustainable companies raging from start-ups to mid-sized industrial companies with long ancestry.

Energy

Clean, green energy is a hallmark for northern Sweden. The region is a role model for sustainable and innovative energy and climate solutions and several small and large-scale energy initiatives are ongoing with potential to transform the industry.
